Welcome to the world of tube electronics .
"I was really impressed with the earlier deHavilland 572-based monoblocks -
these are currently a Positive Feedback reference here in River City- and their
new 845 blocks look terrific and sound exceptional.
Anyone wanting to check
out some truly innovative tube gear should get in touch with deHavilland designs...
definitely worth doing! A Ye Olde Editor's "very highly recommended!" " ---David

George Kielczynski of de Havilland was showing off what in my opinion was the Best 845-Based Amplifier in the show, designed by Kara Chaffee. The Aries 845-G amp with 30Wpc output was fed by the deHavilland UltraVerve preamp, and was feeding Alon Lotus Elite Signature loudspeakers of 90 dB efficiency.
The playback was very involving,
with a live quality and truth of timbre that were beguiling. This system had great
transient response and jump, coupled with subtlety and smoothness. Kara has done
a magnificent job with these amps.Pictured for your viewing pleasure is my attempt
at anartful closeup of the top of an 845 in the deHavilland amp.

Next stop was the deHavilland room, one of my perennial favorite stops at CES. This year was no exception; we got an opportunity to see the new Aries 845G monoblocks in tandem with the UltraVerve preamp (smashing pre, that!), a Sony SCD-777ES SACD player as a front-end, a Cal Audio Alpha D/A for PCM, and the Alon Lotus Elite Signature loudspeakers provided transduction.
Roger S. Gordon liked this room better than any other (see his CES2003 report at http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue4/ces2003rg.htm); there was definitely some very fine mojo going here! The new 845G ups the ante to 36 Watts per channel.and hese are 845 Watts, chillun.
I
don't think that I've heard anyone else get sound this fine out of 845's... if
you haven't heard the "G" model from deHavilland, then you haven't heard what
845's can do. Kudos to George Kielczynski ("Georgie K!") and Kara Chaffee, the
hearts and ears behind deHavilland... keep up the good work!

Another standout, in my opinion anyway, was
the deHavilland room playing through Alon's new Lotus Elite speakers at $4500-$7500
depending on level. Not only do these look great, but they were the best overall
sounding speakers I heard. Smooth, neutral, and very pleasant sounding; they never
intruded on the music. I am glad to see an amplifier maker choose the right speakers
to show off their products!

" deHavilland Electric Amplifier Company Located in a small room at T.H.E.Show, deHavilland was using their UltraVerve preamplifier and their Aries 845-G amplifier. The front end was a Sony SACD 777ES with a California Labs Alpha D/A. Speakers were Alon Lotus Elite Signatures and all cabling by Cardas. This room was my "Best Sound Of Show" room. My CD of two acoustic guitars playing surf music sounded incredibly real.
The two tracks of Lisa Gerrard's singing raised the hairs on the back of my neck it sounded so real. Soundstaging, imaging, you name it, was perfect. An ideal system -until you start playing large orchestral music. Playing The Gladiator Waltz track from the More Music From Gladiator CD was educational...The music is very loud with lots of low bass...
While listening to The Gladiator Waltz track I heard the low notes. I could feel the briefcase on my lap vibrating from the bass. However, I did not viscerally feel the bass. It was a very odd experience to hear the bass, but not feel it. The Alon Lotus Elite Signature speakers are rated down to 28 Hz. So I did not think that they were the problem.
What I suspected was that the single 845
vacuum tube that powers each monoblock ( rated at 30 watts per channel) was not
adequate to the task. I tried to answer that question by going over to the Alexis
Park and playing the same CDs in the Alon by Acarian Systems room. The Alon room
was also using the Lotus Elite Signature speakers. However they were augmented
with two Alon Thunderbolt powered subwoofers. Other equipment included ...Antique
Sound Labs Hurricane 200 watt/channel mono block amplifiers...The Alon system
had bass, it had slam, it had dymanics. The Alon system had everything- except
the magic of the deHavilland system."

The Aries - 845C is a 100% pure class A single-ended triode zero negative feedback amplifier. The Type 845 directly heated triode vacuum tube is justly famous for its sweet tone and authoritative presentation of music. The tube compliment combined with innovative circuitry maintains the right combination of space, sweetness, speed, and pace. The Aries-845 amplifier produces 25 watts, and is designed to drive medium, as well as high efficiency speakers. The dynamic presentation is convincingly that of an amplifier many times greater than it's rated power output design.

All-octal
vacuum tube line preamplifier with tube rectification. deHavilland VERVE Preamplifier:
Product Information We are proud to bring our linestage preamplifier to production.
This is the same line preamp we have used in our CES and THE EXPO shows. It features
the famous 6SN7 octal tube, and all-tube rectification with a 5U4 . We developed
this linestage to complement our 845 SE amplifier. One of the things we wanted
to achieve was a preamp that did not damage the dynamic quality of the music.
The Verve linestage is a true zero-feedback , Class A design.
The octal tube complement coupled with tube rectification produces a huge, full-bodied soundstage and an angelically sweet and dynamic midrange. This preamp is just a joy to listen through. The Verve preamplifier features 100% hand wired point-to-point circuitry. The front panel is heavy anodized aluminum with engraved nomenclature that has been enamel filled, for a long cosmetic life. The chassis is heavy duty aluminum, in powder-coated black. The design places very little stress on the tube compliment, and you will find that the service and sonic life of the tubes, is extremely long.
